SALISBURY - Selectmen will send a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers requesting a review of the condition of the town's jetty in the Merrimack River. If problems are found, they hope Corps will fix them.

The jetty became a focus of the board's attention after Selectman Jerry Klima meet with state, local and Corps officials about erosion on Salisbury's and Plum Island's beaches about two weeks ago.

Although problems with the Newburyport jetty have often been discussed, Klima said, during the meeting a discussion came up that alerted him to the possibility of problems that could develop on the town's beaches should the Salisbury jetty continue to deteriorate.

"Our (jetty) is pretty much deteriorated as well. Waves are breaking over it," Klima reported to the board Monday night. "It has breached in the past."
